Today's practice has been canceled due to rain!

Today’s practice is canceled due to rain.

I am pretty sure that the fields will still be wet Thursday and probably Friday.  However, we do have a game scheduled for 5:30 PM on Friday 10-1 on Field #2 against the Pirates.  Please plan on playing this game.  If anything changes we will let you know as soon as possible.

The season schedule states that rain out will be determined on the field at the time of play.  There is a inclement weather line (467-6484) you may call to see if a rain out has been determined prior to that time.  Your child’s safety on a wet field is of utmost priority so if the field doesn’t have time to drain properly before a game there is a great possibility that we may not play even if it has stopped raining.  Keep looking for further instruction via e-mail and our team site.  We will keep you updates as soon as decisions have been passed down to us.

Thank you!
Thomas Bailey

Practice time CHANGED!

Our next practice is at Farmington Park.  However, the time has changed.  Thomas has obtained new employment due to the impending layoff at Berry.  He was lucky enough to find work before he was actually laid off.  This week his schedule is off a little due to orientation so hang in there with us.  Everything should be back to normal next week.  He has also heard your concerns about Wednesday practices.  We had a hard time getting a field this week and had to take what was available.  I have heard from a couple who will not be able to attend practice this week so I am sure that Thomas will take all of this into consideration but I am sure he was doing so before.

Now for the News....  PRACTICE.

Practice Wednesday 9/29/10 @ Farminton Park from 6:PM to 8:PM.
I am pretty sure he will let the guys go a little early if practice goes well.

Another W for the team

Our boys did a great job last Friday against the D'Backs.  Like the coach I got a little nervous there in the top of the 6th inning but overall I think we played pretty well.  Everyone that pitched did a super job.  We had some pretty good plays in the field too.  Our outfielders stayed on their toes and did a good job of getting the ball in on the few occasions that we let the D'Backs actually get a piece of the ball.  Most importantly we had a great time and the boys had fun!.

Braves Finish - 2010 Season Runner Up

Braves played a great game! They did fall to the Nationals 10-5 but not before giving the Nationals a run for their money. I can honestly say it was a nail biter down to the 3rd out in the bottom of the 6th inning. We really made the Nationals work for their Champion title.

I believe the boys had a good time and none of them have anything to hang their head about. We played a respectfully hard game. They kept their composure and never gave up. They worked hard and in our harts they will always be our Champions!

Coach Thomas and I have been blessed to have the guys in our lives. We are going to miss the ones that are moving up next year and we are counting the days until next season. I don't know how it is at your house but around ours it is Baseball and a little Nascar 24/7/ 365.25/year. Coach Thomas will be handing out certificates at the cookout and we hope you guys can all come. We are looking forward to it.

**** I wholeheartedly feel like we would have won that 4 inning game against the Marlins earlier in the season. If we had not have been cheated out of that opportunity we would very well have been 2nd. Our win would have in turn flipped our standings.

That is quite alright - I truly believe that we will get another chance to show them who should have won the game!

In actuality .... We have strong potential to take the tournament if we find our sticks and play good D.

Length of Game Verified by City of Rocky Mount

Rocky Mount made a final ruling on the length of games for Pee Wee league today. All coaches and officials were notified. The rule book states that all Pee Wee games should be played to 6 innings regardless of time remaining on the clock unless one team is down by more than 5 points at the beginning of the 6th inning.

We may still see 60 min placed on the clock but the game should continue to play after the time runs out allowing for a 6 inning game.

Thomas has filed an official complaint about the outcome of the Marlins game. Contesting the final score. We have asked that we be allowed to finish the last 2 innings picking up from where the game left off or that the game should be considered a draw, meaning there is no winning and no looser. We are waiting to hear back from the Athletic director at this point. I will post any information that we receive from them.

Here is the e-mail that we received from Lynn clearing up the confusion on game time...

From: "Driver, Lynn"

Date: Mon, 10 May 2010 13:12:33 -0400

Subject: rule update

There has been some confusion about one of the pee wee league playing time rules………… I hope to clarify the rule with this message……. All umpires will receive the same message as well………

Our playing rule currently reads that games will be 6 innings. There is no time limit listed in the rules. The only thing that should limit a game to less than 6 innings, would be if a team is ahead by more than 5 runs entering the 6th inning, or ahead by more than 10 runs entering the 5th inning.

It appears that we may have created some unnecessary confusion………… At the beginning of most games, 60 minutes has been placed on the scoreboard game clock………. Our field supervisors thought that by placing 60 minutes on the game clock, that it would help speed up your games……. (so coaches would have catchers ready, so coaches would get in the habit of preparing for the next inning, etc)………. Although we definitely encourage “speed of play” particularly on nights when 2 games are scheduled on the same field, we regret that the 60 minute time clock may have contributed to some confusion.

The purpose of this message is to get us ALL back on the same page………..

Rule #2.2 reads : A maximum of 5 runs or 3 outs will constitute an inning. Teams will play 6 innings. No new inning will start after 6 innings are played. Game can end in a tie.

I hope this clarifies this situation for everyone. We apologize for any confusion. Everyone has done a FANTASTIC job coaching this year. We thank you for your service to our young players!!

If anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Braves Defeat the Undefeated!

5/4 Braves vs Nationals

It was a little overcast, a small breeze, the temperature was comfortable... It was a great night for a ball game.

Braves had a hard time getting things started, not scoring any runs in the 1st and 2nd innings. Finally in the 3rd inning things began to pick up. Ultimately the Braves came back to win a 5 & 1/2 inning game by 1 run. Final Score 6-5

Disappointing Outcome

Tuesday 4/27 - The Braves faced the Rays. We had a touch time hitting the ball where it needed to go. Our first three hitters stepped up to bat and hit it straight to the first baseman. 3 up 3 down. This put us behind for the start. We attempted to rally but weren't as successful as we needed to be. Final Score Rays 15 - Braves 11. We made a few errors, experienced a few bad calls and got a little discouraged at the plate but overall our boys did a great job and played a tough game. They should smile and hold their heads high. We are very proud of the job they did.

Game Called Prematurely

Monday 4/26

The Braves played a much anticipated game against the Marlins. Braves looked good, played hard and did a wonderful job.

1st Inning - Braves scored 3 and held the Marlins to 1. In the 2nd inning we scored one more run and held the Marlins to only 1 additional. After the 3rd Inning the Braves were up by 2. The Marlins held the Braves to no runs in the top of the 4th and then retaliated with 5 runs of their own. We were all ready to play another inning but our 60 min ran out and the umpire thinking that we had played at lest 5 innings called the game.

Final Score Marlins 7 - Braves 5

The official did approach one of our coaches after the game and explained that he thought we had played 5 innings and he should have at least let us play one more inning. We will never know if that would have made a difference in the outcome but all we can do is forget about it, deal with it and move on. We will play the Marlins again and get our chance to shoe them who is really boss of the ball.

I would like to say that although we had several errors I think the boys did a super job last night. They didn't really let the loss get them down and they all said they had fun and that is truly the point of what we are doing here now anyway.

One last shout out to the families supply snacks - Thank you very much!

A Tough One

Thursday 4/22

After Wednesday's wash out and rescheduling of games, we faced the DBacks. We led most of the game and our guys did a awesome job. Unfortunately the Diamondbacks rallied in the 5th inning to go ahead by 4 runs. We tried our best but could only answer with 3 runs leaving us down by one at the bottom of the 6th. - Ball Game

A close exciting game...

4/19 proved to be an exciting one! I didn't bring my score book in today so I can't tell who made the big plays. However, in a nail biter like we had yesterday .... EVERYONE made the big plays. We couldn't do it without each and everyone. Coach and I suffered exhaustion from raised heart rates yesterday but the important part is that you pulled if off and didn't even have to bat in the 6th to keep the lead. It was so wonderful to see your smiling faces last night. That is the way to play guys. It is games like yesterday that keeps the sport interesting and makes it more exciting. It is so hard not to be enthusiastic about this sport after yesterday. SUPER JOB!!!!! Keep up the good work.

We really missed Cody out there yesterday. It was wonderful to see him at the game cheering his team on. We hope your hand heals quickly dude! Then you can get back on the field where you belong.

On a side note PeeWee Athletics beat Rays last night. I don't know what the final score was but I thought you guys will be interested in the results.

Now did any of you see some of the 20 inning Mets vs Cardinals game this past weekend. We didn't watch all of it but we did catch the last several innings. That was a clincher too. Tied 0-0 in the 19th but Mets finally won in the 20th after 7hours, 20 min of play and something like 24 pitchers later... score was 2-1. Longest majors game in quite a while. It was really neat to watch the team adjust their players around in positions that they don't normally play. We don't really pull for either of those teams so the outcome didn't really matter to us but thought it was very entertaining none the less.

Another Great Game

We had another wonderful game last night. The weather cooperated and it was just a beautiful night for baseball. I'll save you the blow by blow this time but I would like to say a HUGE Congrats!!!!!! to Ben. - 3 Home Runs in 1 game. Way to go Dude!!! I am pretty sure we had one from Trent too but I don't have my book with me right now. I am just so amazed every time I see these guys play. This is an awkward couple of years for this age group. It is so neat to see the differences in players when everything just starts to click. I am so proud of each and every one of our players and coaching staff. Even though I think a certain coach should give my son a break, but then again we are always harder on our own. He managed to stay out of the doghouse ... this time- LOL.

Food For Thought

Sometimes in life we are faced with difficult decisions and there will always be those that agree or disagree with the choices we make. We can only hope that we make the decisions that have everyone's best interest at heart and pray that those who disagree will respect us, our choices and move past on without ill will. I pray every day that God gives us the courage, knowledge, patience, time and understanding to not only look at situations from every angle but to do his will. Sometimes there are circumstance that exist that not everyone may know or understand that would prevent us from choosing the same road that others would typically travel. It is during these times that I pray that God gives us the grace to handle the situation and the mercy to understand the point of view of those who disagree.

It has never been our intention to do anything that would hurt a child physically, psychologically or any other way. We do what we feel is the best way to safety instruct your children and make sure they are having fun in the process. Baseball isn't always about fundamentals or competition. The things that your kids learn in baseball can be applied to other aspects of their lives and will be carried with them forever. Now that is a pretty heavy thought for a coach to consider.

As these boys enter a more competitive league it is very important that they learn to conduct themselves properly and learn the meaning of good sportsmanship.

I choose to tell Hunter that I expect him to have a Christ like attitude. As you all can tell we are still working on that… It is important that he learn to have grace about himself when contributes to the score or to accept a bad call. He should have patience for those who don't know the things that he does or may need more instruction because they aren't as experienced as he is. I would hope he is humble enough to admit when he is wrong and eventually laugh about it. Hunter should have respect for elders that attempt to teach him life’s lessons. He should compassion for those who are hurt and sick. I expect him to offer assistance to those in need or pitch in when he can, even when he isn’t asked to help. He has got to learn that we expect a 100% effort every time. He is never allowed to just get lazy because in our house that is a contagious and definitely doesn't allow him to be at his best. A job done halfway is a job not done at all. I pray he has the conviction voice his opinion and defend his faith. I hope he has the courage to put himself out there and take a risk but learn from the mistakes he makes. I hope he has the strength to accept the things he doesn’t understand and to look to God when he can’t find the answers. All these things and more are very very important. I know that it sounds crazy but baseball (or any other activity he does) will help shape Hunter into the Man that he will some day be.

I hope that this tidbit of thought helps you understand how truly we are blessed to have the faith that you have instilled in us to be a part of your child’s life. This isn’t a job that any of us take lightly. I want nothing but the very best for my child and we choose to think of your children as our own. Coaching is a privilege that Thomas doesn’t take lightly. His objective is never to step on any toes or cause anyone concern over his actions but to teach your kids the fundamentals of life… and play a little baseball on the way. Thomas loves what he does and is humbled by your trust in him.

Wonderful Practice Game!!!

Our team did such a great job Monday night. They beat the Athletics in a practice game 19-1. Four of our players scored Home Runs. Congrats to Joey, Ben, Trent and "Q"! Way to go guys. Everyone hit the ball solidly and did a wonderful job listening to the coaches for direction. In the end it really isn't the score that matters it is weather you learned something new and if you had fun doing it! So, SMILE guys and play ball!

You guys are doing a super job. Keep up the hard work at practice. As you can see it definitely pays off. The team has already come a long way from the Iron Mike Tournament in the rain. Think about how far they could go by the end of the season. We encourage you to practice often but don't forget to keep up with your school work first. School should be your first priority and no matter how much more fun playing ball may be ... It is a privileged that should take back seat to your homework and grades.

Thank you to all the parents who sacrifice to get their kids to practice and games on time. We love to see your smiling faces and hear those doting cheers. Thomas and the rest of the coaches are so excited to be a part of your child's life in such a wonderful way. Baseball is truly one of America's best sports! GO BRAVES!!!

4/12/10 - Recap

It was a warm sunny afternoon and we were about to embark on a journey into one of America's greatest sports. The kids were all dressed in matching uniforms and everyone was excited to see them play. Our Braves faced the Athletics yesterday.

Daniel was first at bat. On the second pitch he hit a single. He was followed by Cody, Hunter, Ben, Jackson, Trent (who hit a double) and Jack. In all the Braves scored 3 runs that inning. We changed up and the Athletics managed to get a double but we held them at 0 after 4 at bats.

2nd Inning- Joey led off with a HOME RUN! He was followed by "Q", Jalen, Alem and Zachary. Daniel was back up at bat with a double followed by Cody. We changed sides with 2 outs and 5 Runs. The Athletics returned to the bag with 1 strike out and 2 assisted outs at 1st base. 3 up 3 down...

3rd Inning - Ben started us off with a HOME RUN followed by Jackson. Then it was Trent's turn. Trent decided he would not be shown up by Ben or Joey and followed with his own HOME RUN. Jack and Joey each followed with singles before "Q" stepped up to the plate for another HOME RUN. With 5 runs and no outs it was time to switch up again. The Athletics took their turn at bat. 1 struck out, A single, another strike out followed by an assisted out from 3rd to 1st.

4th Inning - Jalen lead off with a double followed by Alem, Zachary, Daniel and Cody. We ended our turn with 1 run. The Athletics stepped up to bat. Their 2nd batter Colby Freeman hit a Home Run and he was followed by a Double. It looked like things may turn around for the Athletics but the next 2 at bat struck out and the Braves were up again.

5th Inning - Hunter led off the order with a single. followed by Ben, Jackson, Trent, Jack , Joey and "Q". The Braves earned 5 more singles and 2 triples in that round. Top of the 5th ended with 5 runs and 1 out. Now one more chance for the Athletics. 4 batters up and all 4 with solid hits but with 2 assisted outs at 1st and an unassisted out at 2nd the Game was over before the Athletics could score again.

Final Score Braves 19- Athletics 1

Way to go Sundrop Braves. Coach Thomas and I couldn't be more proud of your accomplishments this weekend. Friday night was a tough one but Saturday was thrilling. You guys held your heads up and stayed in the game. You guys got a lot of solid hits and everyone did a great job in the field to get the outs that you needed for your first win of the season. We hope this season is full of firsts for this team. Wouldn't it be great if we could win the season!!! I know you can and Coach Thomas is sure your will.

You have practice Thursday @ 7:00PM - Coach will be calling you to let you know where the practice will be held.

If I don't get a chance to update again before Easter... You guys have a wonderful Spring Break and be ready to play some serious ball when it is over.
